Kodachrome
GP9 in Coos Bay Yard |
This GP9E 3846, a phase III Kodachrome unit sitting in Coos Bay. I took this photo in May of 1990. As you can see, it has lost most of its SP nose light cluster at this point.

SD9E 4422
in Roseburg yard |
This is SD9E SP 4422 in Roseburg Yard. The E means this is a rebuilt SD9 with an updated electrical cabinet (notice the sheet metal extension behind the cab roof.) Also these units were renumbered into the 4300 and 4400 series when they were rebuilt in the 1970s.

Here is another view of the same loco. I took both of these photos in 1987. The loco was sitting right in front of the Roseburg station, and true to SP form, it could use serious repaint.

| SD45R 7441 in a new black paint scheme |
Who says the SP never washed their locomotives? Well, here is a very dirty SD45R passing through Sutherlin, Oregon in the summer of 1990. It looks like SP 7441 under all that crud ...
|
From this closeup of the back you can see that it's 7441 all right. This loco is so dirty you can barely see the scarlet through the black, greasy soot. Someone has wiped off the number on the end so you can see which loco this is!
|
And, yes 7441 has a front end, too -- and it's a little cleaner than the back end (well, relatively speaking). In fact, 7441 doesn't look as unusual from this angle. It looks like your typical filthy SP locomotive from here.

| Panoramic shot of helper set |
This interesting photo is a special panoramic shot I took of an entire mid-train helper set on the Siskiyou Line between Sutherlin and Oakland, Oregon. The set consists of two SD40T-2s (the first one a "snoot" and the second one not), a BN SD40-2 and an SD45R.
This panoramic shot is actually three separate photographs that have been "stiched" together through the magic of computer photo manipulation. The result is a delightful record of an era that, sadly, is no more on the Siskiyou Line today.

GP9E
phase III in Roseburg yard |
This a GP9E phase III (you can tell because it has the single large 48" fan on the back of the hood on the top).
I took this photo in 1987 at Roseburg, Oregon. The loco was sitting right in front of the Roseburg station.
