Let's follow a train around the layout ... page 5
We're running the Coos Bay Hauler East. This is an actual train we run during an op session. As we follow the train around the layout, you'll also get to see how the layout looked as of March 2003.
Picking up water cars in Roseburg
We have reached the other end of Roseburg yard. By order of the Forest Service, all trains travelling over a significant grade need to have water cars behind the locomotives dowsing the roadbed to reduce the likelihood of fires from April - October.
Here our locomotives cut off the head end and pick up two water cars to add to our train.
The one structure on the right and the nearby tent card is a placeholder for Empire Gas of Roseburg. In the middle distance directly to the left of the train is the site of Roseburg station.

Leaving Roseburg
We've got our water cars added to our train so we amble out of Roseburg and head for the North Umpqua bridge.
In the distance is the eventual site of Champion Plywood, a significant Roseburg industry that ships by rail.

Crossing the North Umpqua
Just east of Roseburg, we cross the North Umpqua River. This scene was under construction for about two years, and is now finally finished.
Those who have seen the prototype bridge can attest that my version of the scene does capture the look of the prototype. With the vegetation now in place, this feels very much like the real scene.

Rolling through Oakland
Here our train rolls through Oakland, Oregon -- another lumber mill town. Actually, by the 1980s, the lumber mill has shut down, but I am taking some license in keeping this particular mill open, since I grew up right next to the Martin Bros. mill in the 1960s.
This mill structure here will be almost 4 feet long, and will see up to a dozen cars a day.
In the distance, we begin the 2.5% assault on Rice Hill.
