Joe Fugate's HO Siskiyou Line Model Railroad

Let's follow a train around the layout ... page 4

We're running the Coos Bay Hauler East. This is an actual train we run during an op session. As we follow the train around the layout, you'll also get to see how the layout looked as of March 2003.

Climbing Camas Mountain (helix)

Climbing Camas Mountain (helix)At this point, our train has completed one turn around the helix. Where you see the lead loco, the train will pop out of tunnel 2 and come out into a short shadowbox scene (the area has no cardboard barriers along the sides of the track). On the right the train will dive back into another tunnel (tunnel 1) and complete another trip around the helix to arrive at Winston Junction.

This shadowbox scene will allow operators to check the progress of their train as it progresses up the two tiers of the helix. As I have mentioned, I dislike hidden trackage, so this shadowbox scene negates one of the disadvantages of a helix: they can swallow a train for what seems like an eternity.

Back to the Siskiyou Line main at Winston Junction

Back to the Siskiyou Line main at Winston JunctionOur train has reached Winston Junction, where the Coos Bay branch joins the Siskiyou Line main. The track that goes off to the right is the Siskiyou Line main, heading toward Dillard.

This is the one area on the mushroom design where there is a bit of more traditional double deck layout (deck over deck, both facing the same way). The lower deck you see is the east end of Camas Valley, just before entering the helix. I need to install a few more feet of backdrop in this area on the lower deck, and I need to paint the wall on the right blue to match the rest of the backdrop.

Eventually, the branch will disappear under an 1-5 freeway overpass where it just passes through a hole in the wall today.

Coming into Roseburg

Coming into RoseburgThis photo is actually just to the left of the photo above. Our train is pulling into Roseburg yard, through the west switch.

This is now the upper deck, and we are standing on a 15" raised floor to view this part of the railroad.

Rolling through Roseburg yard

Rolling through Roseburg yardAs our train pulls through Roseburg yard, we can see it's moderately full of cars.

We have no pickups or setouts for Roseburg, so we roll on through at a leisurely 20 mph. The area in the foreground has some loco servicing and industry trackage. The background will have a backdrop and some structures representing the town of Roseburg.
